What is a dental implant and can it replace a missing tooth or teeth? 2017-08-01T08:42:24+00:00

Dental implants are a permanent solution for replacing missing teeth. A dental implant is designed to restore the functionality of your teeth and jaw, as well as build a desired aesthetic appearance. The implant is fused to the jaw bone, which acts as the root for an artificial tooth. This artificial tooth, called a crown, is then attached to the implant, offering a fully functioning, aesthetic solution. They are practically indistinguishable from your natural teeth, and are often a preferred choice over loose dentures.

How can plaque cause gum disease? 2017-08-01T08:41:57+00:00

When the plaque on your teeth and around your gums hardens it turns into calculus, commonly referred to as ‘tartar’. As tartar forms just above and on your gum line, the plaque beneath will release toxins, which will often cause the gums to become high agitated and inflamed. As a result of this irritation, many patients will find that their gums may begin to pull away from the teeth, and these gaps that have now been created start to become infected.

It is important to note that if gum disease is not responded to in a timely manner, the jaw bone supporting the teeth can be damaged and even destroyed, which can also cause healthy teeth to be lost.
