Periodontal maintenance is most commonly used for patients who have undertaken periodontal treatment. These include procedures that clean the teeth and gums, after the event of periodontal surgery or during the treatment of periodontal disease, with the aim of maintaining good oral hygiene.
As gum disease tends to recur it is important to return for maintenance therapy. The aim is for the Periodontist to prevent, monitor and control the periodontal disease. Unfortunately with even the best oral hygiene, some areas may still not be accessible by anything other than specialist equipment and experienced professionals.
